Back to it...

Pretty much from square one. That's OK.

I haven't been running much at all. I had my two triathlons over the summer. They were good. The Tri for the Cure was awesome, as it is every year. My performance was off - I hadn't really trained - which can kind of put a crimp in your performance! But I still had fun.

Now I need to figure out what the heck I am doing. I have gained weight - no surprise there. I have lost fitness. NO surprise there either. But I am not too far gone to get it back. It will take a while, but I know I can do it.

So, I called a friend who is a personal trainer and asked her if she could help me. She assure me that she could - we haven't gotten together yet, but we will.

I have done some soul searching and have realized that I am blessed with a passion for running. I know I complain about it when I am training for a race, but I really love to run. I feel most happy when I have a huge race in my future. I need to get back to this core of my person.

I have wanted to run a marathon since I was 29 years old. That was 1977 folks. That is a long time. I am going to try to first get in shape, and then train for a marathon. I am looking for a race in fall 2010. Maybe Richmond?

Any suggestions for a first time marathon? It has to have over a 6 hour limit. Sorry, but I have never gotten under 3 hours for a half marathon, so I don't think I will try to do a marathon in under 6 hours. Oh, and it should be flat, friendly, and at sea level.

My little first step towards my goal was a 2 mile run on the treadmill this morning. See? I said I was starting all over again...

Hi Mary... Good to see you getting back with it! I don't have any recommendations for a particular race but definitely pick a goal of some sort. I've gotten a lot of motivation over the past year by just running any races I could get to (but more 5k's than anything). Maybe while you're training for the marathon you'd get some extra inspiration by doing some smaller local races along the way.

Can't help you choose a race, but it sounds like a marathon is in your heart. I'm confident you will find the right event for you.

Sounds great that you have a Personal Trainer friend to help you get back into things.

I did the Richmond half last year – you shouldn't have any trouble with it, but for a truly flat course in the fall I'd pick the Space Coast Marathon in Florida. In fact, I'm thinking of doing that one in 2010. Two drawbacks: It's the Sunday after Thanksgiving, which makes it kind of hard if you have a big deal dinner for turkey day, and the start time is 6 a.m. I might as well not sleep at all the night before a super-early start. My dad said he would drive anywhere in Florida to see me cross a finish line and he wouldn't have to drive far to see the end of this race.

You aren't going to get much flatter than this. It's for a good cause, and easily accessible.

the just starting over place feels good physically for me too, mentally it is a little tougher. I'm doing 3 or 4 milers right now. I'm planning to run NYC 2010 (and have an automatic entry for it), but I'll put in a plug for the Marathon of the Palm Beaches which is the first or second weekend of December. Weather is beautiful, run along the water and it can't get much flatter than South Florida.

You might also look at the Monumental Marathon in Indianapolis in early November. Very, very flat. Saturday race...cool temps. I'm running it this year...you cah check out my race report on November 8!

Good luck getting back into it!
