Rest Day

Today is a rest day. I am glad too. I am still sore from running 2 miles on the treadmill on Monday. Running a 10 minute mile on a treadmill is a whole different sport than running a 13 minute mile outdoors. I really LOVE slow long-distance running, and basically I don't even like running a moderate pace indoors. But I am sure I would get much better at running if I spent more time trying to go faster.

I ran 3.1 miles yesterday morning - outdoors. It was lovely. It was just at sunrise, the birds were singing, the air was crisp and cool, and I felt fabulous! And I was slow. Do I care? I am not sure.

I do agree that you use the muscles so different between the slow and fast run. Unfortunately on my faster runs I almost always get shin splints..bah.

I'd like to think I'm mature enough not to care about my times, but I do. Everyday is a new race against myself.

I hate, hate, hate running indoors and it just hurts my legs and knees, so unless it's hurricane-like conditions, I'm outside.

Running slow burns F-A-T. Running fast teaches our bodies to run at a faster pace with the same amount of energy. When you are ready for speed work, incorporate it into your plan, but you'll be mentally prepared for it then.

Nice ride to work on the bike too, by the way! That is so cool. Keep at it, and we'll have you tri-ing and on the way to Kona in no time :-)

Hi Mary, I just got word that Durango has cancelled their marathon for 2007, it was supposed to be the week before the Denver Marathon....so maybe I'm setting my sights on Denver in October now....not sure yet.

I am so with you on treadmill running - I hate it. Outdoors is so much nicer and you painted such a lovely picture of your morning run. Pace isn't always everything, enjoying the run is as important (now if only I would take heed of my wise words!)

Have a great Rest Day - they are the best!
